- Title:
- Navajo Nation, Shiprock, San Juan County, New Mexico, USA, Volcanic Throat - breccia and minette
- This iconic natural formation rises 550 meters above the high-desert in the four corners region of New Mexico. Because from a distance it appears to be a ship, it was named Shiprock. The Navajos call it Tsé Bit'a'í, "rock with wings" or "winged rock".
Radiometric dating shows the age of this formation to have been created 27 million years ago. Erosion has left this formation which was the "throat" of a volcano. The layers of mountains and hills surrounding it gives one a sense of ancient mystery, the sort that conjures a landscape of magical beauty.
