- Title:
- Geodesic Dome, Digesters, Tanks, Wastewater Residuals, Rapid City, South Dakota
- Near the end of the wastewater treatment cycle is the problem of solid-waste material. The solution for these solids is to store them for 20 to 30 days in large, heated and enclosed tanks called 'digesters.' It is here that bacteria break down (digest) the solid waste which reduces its volume, odors, and also eliminates the dangerous organisms that can cause disease. The final product is mostly sent to landfills, but also it is sometimes used as fertilizer.
